“I seem to have become known for wearing ‘very loud’ boxer shorts” says John Turner, our Great British Bank Holiday competition winner, as he tries to explain how his picture came about!
We asked you to send in images that capture what the Great British Bank Holiday means to you and the entries were fantastic, showing the huge range of different activities the British public get up to on a Bank Holiday.
Our winner is John Turner, who took this great picture after reaching the top of Goat Fell, the highest point on the Isle of Arran, Scotland.
“This photo makes me smile every time I see it. We’d arranged a long weekend trip to the Isle of Arran, and planned to climb Goat Fell while we were there. We’d previously been involved in charity walks and The WaterAid Challenge, and decided to use the ascent of Goat Fell to raise a bit more money for them.
“I seem to have become known for wearing ‘very loud’ boxer shorts, so my friends decided that our theme would be ‘Panting for WaterAid’ and some of my pants would be used on the day. The picture is only a small representation of the fun we had that day and on the whole trip. It was a spontaneous summit celebration that made us all laugh till it hurt!”
John will receive a ViewRanger Bank Holiday survival kit as his prize, which includes ViewRanger credits to download 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey mapping for the entire British Isles, which is searchable by postcode or grid reference, and a PowerMonkey Explorer solar powered battery charger to keep his phone topped up when away from home.
We are also throwing in a thermos flask, pack of playing cards and a foil survival blanket – as you never know with the British weather!
We also have 5 runners up; Paul Isles, Helen Chester, Paul Dopson, Alex Atkinson and Polly Davis. (Pictures below.)
They will all receive a bag of goodies including £30 of ViewRanger credit to spend on Ordnance Survey mapping, international premium mapping or guided routes from a choice of over 400 brands, as well as a ViewRanger Jersey Bin, to keep your phone protected, and some ViewRanger stickers and pens!
We want to say a huge thank you to everyone that took part in the Great British Bank Holiday competition for showing us what the Bank Holiday means to you. And don’t forget, no matter how bad the weather is – Keep Calm and Carry On!
