ViewRanger is one of Adventure Posts 10 cool pieces of gear emerging in 2012.
The Viewranger App does a great job turning your SmartPhone into a backcountry navigation tool. This app includes a large database of searchable, highly detailed topo maps. It offers many of the functions of a regular GPS, allowing you to plan, follow and record routes, and create waypoints. You can cache info, so you don’t need an active signal to navigate, and you can get on-screen guidance and alerts to keep you on track. Plus, social media is integrated, so you can share your location, maps, photos and text messages

ViewRanger outdoor GPS app combines mapping, social networking and trail guidebooks
Imagine the power of a US$500 outdoor GPS built into a $5 app available on iOS and Android devices. In a nutshell, that's ViewRanger. The advanced mapping GPS app has been around for years in Europe and just launched in the United States.
When we first heard about ViewRanger, we weren't particularly optimistic - there are, after all, plenty of other GPS apps. After speaking with CEO Craig Wareham and seeing the app in action, we're much more excited.

Apps are apps, right? I used to think so. A week ago UK-based ViewRanger launched its new GPS app. While it offers all the things other apps do – social media integration, web-based applications, records your adventures, and traditional GPS functionality, the ViewRanger takes it a step further.....
....It has a search functionality that will find even the most obscure trail or peak (believe me, I tried and it quickly produced my favorite hiking trail that I believed was so secret only a handful of us knew about)

Today’s smartphones pack built-in GPS capabilities that have all but demolished the need for a standalone GPS unit. But what if there was an app for outdoors enthusiasts that turned your smartphone into the digital equivalent of Bear Grylls? That’s essentially what you can expect from ViewRanger, a powerful outdoor GPS app that’s been available internationally, but is just now launching in the U.S.
