Mountain Biking
ViewRanger gives Mountain Bikers everything they need to hit the trail, packed into their mobile phone.
Mountain Bikers have recognised the benefits of using ViewRanger on their smartphones - such as not needing to carry a separate GPS and having access to detailed topographic mapping. Having covered the ground at speed on a mountain bike, ViewRanger offers the way to view your mapped location instantly – even when there's no mobile coverage.
With ViewRanger you can:
- Measure and view your speed and distance travelled, even change of elevation
- View the location of other members of your group on your phone screen with BuddyBeacon (requires mobile coverage)
- Record your track and export it to share with others or just to keep a log of your trip.
- Plan a route using the app, via my.viewranger.com or import a GPX file from third party software
- Download a route from our route database
- Navigate your route with alarms to alert you at waypoints and if you veer too far off course.
CASE STUDY – Summit Sixty-Five
Summit MTB Club in the Chilterns has
a history of successfully organising XC racing, youth racing and even a MTB
duathlon, but took on the challenge of hosting their first mass participation MTB
Enduro the “ Summit Sixty-Five” in June 2011. Here’s what event
organiser, Richard Rollins told us about how using ViewRanger has helped the
club; “Whilst the event plan came together quickly, I realised that something
was missing. I’d spent many hours refining the three route options, but I had
not worked out how I could easily market these to potential entrants,
communicate them to participants using online maps and GPX route files, and allow
riders to navigate the route(s) on the day and not get lost.”
Realising that the smartphone was a key to achieving this, Richard hooked up with us and we agreed a support mechanism using the mobile app and our online route planning tool to help address these missing components.Richard explained to us that using ViewRanger; “took the hassle out of route finding for participants so they could get the most from the ride.” He added, “Also by publishing our routes on My.ViewRanger, participants could easily access interactive maps of the route(s), route downloads and further route information such as length, surface and difficulty.”
In
summary, the Summit Sixty-Five 2011 attracted almost 200 riders which exceeded
all forecasts for the first year and following positive rider feedback, the
event will be back bigger and better in 2012.
Richard Rollins commented; “We look forward to working with ViewRanger
again in 2012 - ongoing improvements to My.ViewRanger.com will help us to be
even more effective in promoting our event and in communicating route
information and context to riders.” “In
addition, we hope to use the ViewRanger BuddyBeacon service that tracks riders in
real-time (with their consent) on an interactive map and to display this on a
large screen to provide a real attraction at next year’s event” he exclaimed.
