I love maps. I could pore over them for hours looking at contour lines and pathways; searching for hidden things to go and find.......So it’s with a inward squeal of delight that I often pull out my iPhone 4S* and bring up the Viewranger App to centre on my position and see if there’s anything of interest nearby....

SUMMARY: Viewranger for iPhone is a mind-bogglingly good piece of kit for the price. For under £2 you turn your iPhone into a good GPS when there’s no phone reception. Pay for the OS Map package (£15) and you have a brilliant, detailed off-road GPS. Stunning value.

  • Horse & Rider Feb 2012

February Issue 2012: Horse & Rider's Soraya Abdel-Hadi wrote "I love this app and can't believe I ever lived without it. Since I've started using it for both dog walking and hacking, I have not got lost once - a minor miracle for me as I'm known for wandering off when the mood takes me!".

"I am now obsessed with tracking my route and not just to see where I left my car or which way the yard is, but because it tells me how far I've gone, how long it took me and my average speed. I think it would benefit endurance riders.....".

  • Webtogs (Dec'11)

Our numero uno by some distance. There are a fair few GPS and navigation apps out there now, ........., but the one that stood tall in our eyes was ViewRanger. Many people now have smartphones, so rather than lashing out on a brand new GPS, why not make use of the power that you have in your pocket?.....

  • Live for the Outdoors (Nov'11)

.. a thoughtful and versatile program that has proven itself a hit across a massive range of touch-screen smartphones, as well as being put to the test by 50 per cent of search and rescue teams across the UK. The touch-screen interface is impressive, particularly on the high-resolution iPhone screens with pinch-zoom capability. It utilises an in-app function to purchase outdoor maps for just about anywhere in the world. It has all the functions you would expect from a GPS system: scrolling OS mapping, trip computer, the ability to add waypoints, download routes (including Trail Routes) and information about the area you’re in.

  • Trail Magazine: Group Test - GPS receivers (Sep'11)

Rated as "Best Value" in test versus dedicated GPS devices. (Issue October 2011)

"ViewRanger software is superb and extremely cost effective".....

....The iPhone has an incredibly high-quality screen, which makes this by far the best option for reading OS maps in detail. The sensitivity of the screen is aslo second to none, so again touch-screen functionality is a dream.

  • CrowdedBrain.co.uk (31st August 2011)

Recommended - overall 8.0 score." Preparation is key to using ViewRanger and if you know where and what you are doing the software will provide you with a great experience at a relatively low price point!.........Accuracy though was key and the software was able to track our position perfectly."

Gear Guide (June 2011) Head to Head v's Outdoors GB

Outdoors GB has many useful features but overall was not as comprehensive as ViewRanger.

    "... excellent value option...

  • OutdoorsMagic GPS Gear Test (April 2011)

"Our other winner, is a smart phone - preferably a ruggedised one - running the excellent ViewRanger software. It's as good as a stand-alone GPS with added neat features, you'll probably be carrying your phone anyway, batteries are replacable and light, and you can download mapping you don't already have directly as well.

  • GPS Group Test [Jan 2010]

"Innovative software that transforms your phone."

"The device is certainly the most stylish out of those featured. The first thing that struck me was the clarity of the screen on this device. It is astonishingly clear and crisp, and by far the best here. Operation of the touch-screen was equally impressive. A swipe of the thumb moved the map across the screen with rapid regeneration of detail.

A finger can be used, but the stylus (included) is ideal for creating routes on screen and switching between functions. You get all the usual functions such as route creation as well as 3D panorama maps that identify features around your location. Additional maps can be downloaded directly via mobile internet."

  • The Great Outdoor Challenge [August 2010]

ViewRanger GPS, the smartphone digital mapping and navigation app for outdoor enthusiasts, came out on top in the Great Outdoors Challenge on Channel 5's The Gadget Show last night. In the final part of the challenge, Gadget Show presenters, Ortis Deley and Suzi Perry had to navigate their way to the summit of the Pap of Glencoe, with Suzi using a traditional outdoor GPS unit whilst Ortis was kitted out with a Google Nexus One mobile phone equipped with the ViewRanger GPS app with Ordnance Survey topographic mapping.

Suzi was ahead as both presenters entered this final stage of the Challenge. However, Ortis was able to triumph and finish first using the walking routes available for live download within ViewRanger GPS. You can catch up with the navigation part of the challenge at The Gadget Show's website here:

  • Wild Review: ViewRanger for iPhone

"The thought of having all these maps available on my phone and in my pocket makes me positively giddy.  The app features many of the same functions found on GPS devices: create routes, mark waypoints and points-of-interest, set up alarms to warn if you stray too far from your intended route and so on." The more you use it, the more adept you become [at using the app] and after creating a few practise routes and marking some POIs I started to hum along."

Four and a half stars out of five.

  • Where in the world? A review of the latest generation GPS and digital mapping systems.

"Loaded onto a compatible smartphone, ViewRanger is as much a must-have mobile accessory as camera and video were a few years back. It's all pretty mindblowing and fantastic value for money. Phone reception is not necessary to locate yourself using the GPS receiver and reception was always excellent during test. Battery life is also much better on a phone than a PDA or GPS unit and also lighter and less bulky to carry."

    ViewRanger earned a top rating of 4.5 / 5.0

  • ViewRanger Review - PC Advisor

"ViewRanger use the handset's integrated GPS to take your position and display a map of your location. From our central London office, we were presented with a host of different routes that among other things took in London's Royal Parks, through to a tour of Whitechapel and Liverpool Street that centred on Jack the Ripper. It's the ideal solution of outdoor enthusiasts that want to pinpoint their location, take interesting walks or even have a back-up to ensure they can return if they get lost in a rural location.

    Overall: 4/5 stars."

  • SatNav for UK Walkers

"It is now more or less impossible to get lost in the hills.

...I hadn't even discovered the most exciting aspect of the software. Flicking between the route description ("Continue through a small gate beside an electrically operated five-bar gate") and the map, I noticed a trip function. This gives you whole pages of statistics on how your walk is unfolding: how many metres it is to the next waypoint; how far you've walked; how much further you have to go; your estimated time of arrival at the pub; your altitude.

I went off the next day for a run on another ViewRanger route. By now, I had worked out how to make it beep only once per waypoint. I glanced at it every now and again to check speed, progress, altitude. If I took a wrong turn, it beeped at me until I untook it.

Most cleverly, you can link up with other ViewRanger users in your walking, skiing or mountain-biking party and they will be represented by little red dots on your phone."

  • Turn your touchscreen smartphone into the best OS-compatible GPS out there.

"Our Verdict: Everyone who used ViewRanger on the Nokia 5800 phone was blown away by it, to the point where our test unit spent some time on tour all over the UK."

"How It Performed: It says something that it's taken us ages to review ViewRanger on the XpressMusic touchphone, the bottom line is that we simply didn't want to give it back, the combination of compact size, light weight and smooth, easy to use software makes it arguably the best OS mapping GPS solution out there."

"It has an unbeatable combination of compact size and low weight, a clear and readable screen with beautifully rendered mapping - take note Garmin - and a reasonably intuitive menu that allows you to use it in a basic but effective way or to take advantages of its more advanced features."
