Fresh off the back of winning Trail Magazine’s 2015 Mountain Photo of the Year, climber, photographer and mountaineer Paul Brett is releasing a fantastic new book, detailing his years of adventures on the Scottish Highlands.
In ‘Mountaineering in the Scottish Highlands’ Paul takes you on a spectacular journey through the Highlands, showcasing iconic sights as well the places he traversed to reach them, including Aonach Eagach, Buachaille Etive Mor and Bidean Nam Bian.
Armed with plenty of hiking gear and camera equipment, Paul also used ViewRanger to assist him on his journey, using the app to plan, plot and track his routes, so he knew exactly where he was and where he needed to go.
We caught up with him ahead of the book launch and he told us a bit about the book, his inspiration, and what’s next for him:
I first got into climbing when a friend asked me to join him over the Christmas holidays to tackle the Munro, Broad Cairn in the southern reaches of the Cairngorms National Park, and my camera was the first thing in the rucksack for the day’s climb. It was fairly uneventful compared to future climbs but the incredible views and the photos had captured my interest. I immediately bought more substantial kit and I started climbing pretty much most weekends from that point, with over 100 summits out of the 282 Munros done.
I was aware early on that navigation and route finding was essential in the mountains and thought that there must be an app that would do the job and after a quick search I found ViewRanger. I have used it ever since and never climb without it, and to date it has never let me down, the GPS allows me to pin point my exact spot and the pre-loaded map and routes means I never have to worry and can concentrate on getting the shots I'm after. View Ranger is without doubt my essential piece of kit that I would never be without.
I have plans in place for a follow-up book, so I’ll keep finding and sharing the wonderful Scottish mountains, plus I want to head to a few European ranges and climb there.
