Britain’s best-selling mountain biking magazine, Mountain Biking UK (MBUK), and ViewRanger have partnered to deliver downloadable mountain bike trail guides for smartphones and tablets.
Beginning with its celebrated 300th issue, Mountain Biking UK magazine is publishing its recommended rides through the ViewRanger app. From February 2014, route guides printed in MBUK’s Big Ride section will, at the same time, be made available digitally in the ViewRanger app allowing the ride guides and maps to be downloaded and taken out on the trail.
To find and download these routes in the ViewRanger app go to Store > By Brand > MBUK
You can also favourite MBUK both in app or on my.viewranger.com to see their latest routes in your ViewRanger Activity Feed as soon as they are published each month.
To do this in app go to Favourites and search for MBUK. When you've favourited it, all MBUK activity will appear in the 'Latest Actvity' tab in Favourites.
Each MBUK branded route includes detailed descriptions, photographs and advice on the difficulty, length and elevation to help mountain bikers select the most appropriate trail.
When following a MBUK Big Ride route guide the ViewRanger app will accurately show your location and track on a map. The app also includes power saving features to ensure your smartphone battery lasts a full day's riding.
The MBUK route guides can be combined with a range of free map layers available within the ViewRanger app, including OpenCycleMap, although for off-road it is usually necessary to download the relevant Ordnance Survey map, which can be purchased in-app. When you go to download the route in app, you will be given the choice to download either the tiles, or the whole area of OS mapping needed for that ride.
The routes in the magazine can be also downloaded by scanning individual QR codes generated for each route. If you have ViewRanger installed, it should open the route straight up in app.
As with our other magazine partnerships, these routes are a companion to the routes published in the actual magazine, so each month the route featured as the Big Ride can be downloaded along with three other featured routes across the country.
Queen Elizabeth Country Park in Hampshire is the Big Ride featured in issue 300.
