Saddle up for #Rio2016

With 6 equestrian events in this year’s Rio 2016 Olympics we thought we would honour this great sport and give you a chance to get involved with your companion this summer. So saddle up for some of Britain’s best horse rides. 


Horseriding

1. South Pennines, Lancashire (FREE)
Difficulty: Medium
Length: 4.86 miles

This is an ancient packhorse route and national trail taking you the length of the Pennines bridleway. A steady ride with some steep climbs to test your ability and control (a great way to try your hand at Olympic dressage) and with plenty of saddle-eye views to look out for, this track is full of pretty scenery.

2. Horner Valley, Somerset  (FREE)
Difficulty: Medium
Length: 4.98 miles

Explore Exmoor’s ancient oak woodlands at a higher level with this perfect horse riding route and designated bridle trail. Be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife in the woods and see what you can spot.

3. Standalone, County Durham (FREE)
Difficulty: Medium
Length: 5.96 miles

A farmland and Woodland walk requiring control and patience, just like Olympic Equestrian events. With a few dismounts, rocky routes and steep climbs this route gives you lots of variety to practise your riding.

4. Rushcroft Farm, New Forest (£)
Difficulty: Medium
Length: 6.39 miles

A fun route beginning at a farm, you’ll then pass two rivers for an enjoyable splash about with your horse companion. After crossing the rivers gallop your way up towards the Setthorns Hill.

Bridleway

5. Cherry Orchard Farm, Bedford (FREE)
Difficulty: Medium
Length: 5.66 miles

Passing farmland and a golf course, this is a pretty picturesque ride with ideal tracks for your horses. This route loops round with the chance to stop off at the café for a quick drink while on your journey.

Best for: Countryside riders
